The Mahatma Randhi SBNR Club

(Weekly meet-ups for folks like you and me who are “SPIRITUAL BUT NOT RELIGIOUS”)

Are you Spiritual But Not Religious (SBNR)?

Check the statements below which apply to you:

  • You feel restricted by or disgruntled with organized/institutional religion.
  • You do not believe in the stereotypical or cultural portrayal of God that had been taught to you.
  • You are skeptical of the religious faith that had been passed on to you by your parents or forebears.
  • You feel that organized religions can be divisive, simplistic, arrogant, hypocritical, ritualistic, outdated, culture-bound, dogmatic, punitive, or restrictive.
  • You believe that there is no single religion that holds a monopoly on God or on spiritual truths.
  • You do not believe in the literal interpretation of the scriptures.
  • You enjoy learning from various spiritual traditions, discovering spiritual truths, and exploring diverse spiritual practices.
  • You believe that spirituality can also be found in science, psychology, philosophy, and art.
  • You prefer to be guided by spiritual values and virtues, rather than religious dogma and creeds.

To conclude, you are SBNR if you have an independent and personal form of spirituality that enlivens your spirit and nourishes your soul.

What are your credentials for leading an SBNR community?

I am an ordained 22nd generation Daoist Priest of the Dragon Gate (Northern Quanzhen) lineage.

I am also an ordained Daoist Monk of the Awaken to Reality (Wuzhen Pai) sect of Orthodox Unity (Zhengyi) school of Southern Daoism.

  • I was ordained as Daoist priest and monk by Shifu Zhang Lao Shi / Lao Da Long (Patrick Lovitt) of the Four Dragons Institute, Houston, Texas in 2018.
  • My ordained Daoist Monk-Priest name is “Li Zhe.”

As a Christian, I now identify myself as a liberal-mystical Christian. I grew up as a Roman Catholic, was an active Evangelical-Pentecostal Christian in my teenage and young adult years. I also taught Christian counseling courses at the Asian Theological Seminary, and was founding president of the Philippine Association of Christian Counselors.

I was previously an active Zen sitter of Bahay Dalangin Zen Community established by Zen Master and Cenacle Sister Sonia Punzalan. Also, I previously served as mindfulness retreat facilitator for the Boat of Compassion Sangha of Plum Village Philippines that had been established by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hahn.

I have a daily practice of Clairvision meditation.

My “non-dual” spirituality is influenced by Advaita Vedanta through my practice of Self-Inquiry meditation.

And finally, as a psychotherapist, my spirituality is also psychologically-grounded in the philosophy of gestalt therapy, existential therapy, and transpersonal psychotherapy.
